About Clare Lupino

Clare’s background

The Ida Connection
When you’re a relative of Ida Lupino, it’s easy to see how transformative a glamorous piece of jewellery can be!

It's no exaggeration to say that Ida Lupino was born to be in the entertainment business. Her father was a famous dance hall performer in England, and her mother was known as the fastest tap dancer alive. She began performing at 10, entered the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art at 13, and first appeared on film at 15.

Ida Lupino fulfilled her early promise and became a movie star, and later on one of the most prolific women directors in Hollywood history.

Having gained a First Class honours degree in Contemporary Arts, where she specialised in large scale site-specific installations and Performance Art, Clare continued to practice as an artist for many years, whilst also Lecturing on the Theory of Art until she suffered a head injury whilst at work (a large piece of wood fell ontop of her). This forced Clare to re-evaluate her role in the artistic community and whilst recovering, she explored several avenues in a desperate bid to chanel her creativity (including writing a book and training as a tattooist!).

Clare then made her own wedding tiara, incorporating a discarded minature dancing ballerina doll from a 1950’s musical Venice gondola souvenir. The finished piece was dripping with vintage crystals and pearls as well as her Grannie’s brooch and earrings! This amazing work of wearable art was greeted by so many with great excitement and Clare was inundated with requests for something unusual…Clare now stocks select galleries and retail outlets as well as having her own retail-workshop outlet in Hebden Bridge.

Comments about Clare Lupino pieces

Clare’s intuitive understanding of the past and its echoes brings an ecclectic quality to her work that I have yet to see elsewhere”…
Lisa Allen, actress.

"I am an avid fan of Clare's work and to date own two of her designs. To my mind, Clare's unique trademark is a fussion of intricate, feminine charm with a colourful sense of humor" Ursula Holden-Gill, Actress

I always want every piece of her jewellery all to myself! When it comes to Clare’s beautiful creations, the feminine virtue of self sacrifice is entirely against my nature! How does Clare Lupino’s jewellery make me feel? Vanitas Vanitatum! (vanity of Vanities!)
Marianne McMillan, British Airways

This jewellery set is both stunning and original. I no longer buy jewellery to go with my clothes, I buy clothes to go with my jewellery!!”
Rachel Pickles, Sales and Services Manager, Halifax Banks.

" I have two of Clare Lupino’s neckpieces: They each have individual personalities. When I wear them I feel extra-special; they radiate a rich glow and people find them tantalising to look at! Because each piece is different, I know that no one will ever have one exactly the same - having said this, Clare manages to portray a distinctive style which makes her creations all the more desirable!
Nikki Rose, textile artist.
